Rainwater Harvesting

Education - Non Pressurised system

Rain water harvesting has been something in the corner of my mind for a long time. With the current dry spell that we are facing and with water rationing I finally decided to explore this option seriously. The fact that we are using clean, processed water to flush our toilets, wash our porch or water our plants is just crazy. There are so many people around the world who would do so much for some clean water and how we don’t give a shit about the water we get is just horrible.

More than 3.4 million people die each year from water, sanitation, and hygiene-related causes. Nearly all deaths, 99 percent, occur in the developing world

So i met a few vendors who can help set me up with the gear i need for rainwater harvesting and there is no lie in how it cost so much to do the right thing. You have to pay a premium for a gym membership so you can be healthy, you need to pay a premium to be a vegetarian, you need to premium to fit your home with a solar system or even rain water harvesting.

So the guy that came by to my place quoted me almost RM 5,000 to have a water tank, a filter for the pipe of the water flowing through to the tank (and all this does not include the cost of any possible plumbing. Location of the tank? My porch! It can’t be hidden and not in taking up space. Oh and this takes the cake, I can ONLY use the water to wash my porch, JUST MY PORCH!

I don’t think ill every spend anything close to RM 5,000 worth of water to wash my porch in a lifetime! Its ridiculous!

I wish the government would do something where it mattered. They seem more interested in scrambling around water ownership but does seem to be very interested in solving the problem long-term, in a sustainable manner. I hope we get lawmakers who are capable to think beyond their interest and make some real innovative measures for us tax payers.
